How Generations Are Counted in Modern Pedigrees

Understanding Sosa-Stradonitz (Ahnentafel) numbering, generational levels, and lineage depths.

In generational science, the Sosa-Stradonitz (Ahnentafel) method assigns number 1 to the subject (proband). The father is number 2, the mother is number 3. Every father's number is double the child's (2n), while mothers are 2n + 1. Generational levels in modern graph databases, however, represent topological layers independent of binary paternalistic constraints.
