How to Organize and Digitize Vintage Family Photographs

Preservation standards, resolution choices, metadata labelling, and safe physical storage for antique albums.

Antique gelatin silver and albumen prints should be stored in acid-free envelopes away from direct light. When scanning, use at least 600 DPI for prints smaller than 4x6 inches. Never write in ballpoint pen on the back of prints; use soft 2B pencil on the outer margin if strictly necessary. Digital copies should be enriched with context, year, and confirmed subject names.
