Recording Family Oral Histories Without Fictional Embellishment

Best practices for transcribing taped conversations, noting source credibility, and documenting disputed memories.

When capturing oral recollections, always record verbatim audio or notes before organizing. Distinguish between first-hand eyewitness accounts ('I was at the dock in 1948') and third-hand family legends. Family history values both: emotional truths tell us who our ancestors were, while documented facts ground their chronology.
